Edits: Instagram Announces Video Editing App to Challenge TikTok’s CapCut

On Sunday, in a video post shared both on Instagram and Threads, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced Edits, “a brand new app to make videos on your phone.” the announcement comes after when ByteDance’s video-sharing platform, TikTok, and its video editing app, CapCut, were removed form Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store in the U.S. due to national security concerns.

With the launch of the new app, Meta aims to fill the  gap left by CapCut, although TikTok is once again available in the U.S. due to the efforts by newly elect President Donald Trump. However, the future of ByteDance’s apps remains uncertain in the U.S.

Mosseri said “Today, we are announcing a new app called “Edits” for those of your who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators”

He further added that on the app, users can edit videos not just for Instagram, but for other platforms as well. Edits is not just a video editing app; it will be a complete suite of tool for creators.

What keys features will Edits offer?

The app will include a dedicated tab for inspiration and trending audio to get ideas. there will also be a tab for tracking all ideas, even if they are in draft from. Additionally, Edits will offer a higher quality camera, And users will be able to share their drafts with friends or other creators.

Edits comes with with ability to share the video directly on Instagram as a Reels, and users will be able to get insight on how their Reels are performing. Edit will roll out in March 13, but you can pre-order it on the App Store. The app will also be available soon on the Android platform.

Meta is currently working with a group of creator and plans to involve more in the process over the next couple of weeks to gather feedback on the app’s development. Mosseri stated that the the first version of the app will be incomplete and urged users to be patient, but he expressed excitement to putting the app into users hand.

In a response to The Verge’s Chris Welch, why Edits is launching in March and it seems like work on this CapCut clone has just started a few weeks ago, Mosseri explained they have already spent months working on the app. He added  that edits will be quite different than the CapCut, offering a broader range of creative and AI tools.
