Deep Research is an AI tool integrated with ChatGPT that will perform in-depth, multi-step web browsing. It will discover content and provide synthesized, citation backed reports. Its is powered by OpenAI’s o3 reasoning model.
On February 03, 2025, OpenAI demonstrated its second AI agent, Deep Research, on their YouTube channel. In January, OpenAI has released its first AI agent, Operator.
Deep Research produces comprehensive, fully cited research, similar to what an analyst or expert in a specific field might create. It is built for users who engage in detailed knowledge work in fields such as finance, science, and engineering.
In addition to conducting research, Deep Research also helps users with shopping by allowing them to thoroughly explore the market. It browses every relevant website on the internet for a product and provides users with concise, specific results, including comparisons and tables.
The company claims that the OpenAI research tool will complete the task in minutes, a process that would take humans hours to accomplish.
Instead providing search results in seconds, Deep Research will take between 5 to 30 minutes to deliver the best, most detailed answers to users.
Deep Research is integrated with ChatGPT and accessible through a dedicated “Deep Research” in the chatbox. It can also analyze text, images and PDFs to extract information. After entering a query, it will ask for necessary clarifications. Once the clarifications are provided, it will start browsing the web. The progress of the research is displayed step-by-step in a sidebar of the browser.
OpenAI’s Deep Research tool is available to Pro users at a subscription cost of $200 a month. The company plans to launch it for Plus, Team and Enterprise plans in the future. The Pro users are limited to 100 queries per month.
OpenAI further stated in a blog post on Sunday that Deep Research is in its early stages and has certain limitations. At times, it may provide incorrect or inaccurate results, or struggles to differentiate between rumors and real information. However, OpenAI foresees that with continued use and development, these issues will be minimized over time.
